UK Energy Policy – Prescribed by Germany and France?

The last few weeks have been busy times in the EU and UK energy sectors – and the next few months are unlikely to be any different. 

Whilst the issue of UK energy policy elicits many strong – and often countervailing – views, there is one genuine constant, namely the widespread belief in a mixed energy policy. Of course, within that general consensus, there are polarising views as to whether such a policy should embrace nuclear power – and especially the construction of new nuclear-build.

Can Nuclear Programmes Survive Fukushima?

The ongoing drama of the Fukushima nuclear power complex, where partial nuclear melt-down and radiation leaks are continuing, has many implications.

The real operational problem appears to be a loss – total or partial – of water cooling systems, which are vital in controlling and slowing down a nuclear reaction. To date, the nuclear vessels themselves appear to have survived reasonably intact, but radiation leakages have been confirmed. Although the extent of these leakages is unknown, reports indicate that, to date, they are still relatively small. However this could, of course, change markedly.

AIM - a tough market for cleantech compnies - by Andrew Hore

Although a few new entrants have joined AIM this year, cleantech companies are still leaving the junior market. Stock markets around the world are becoming tougher places to raise money again, but the problems with the latest company to shun its AIM quotation date back to its flotation and lack of financial progress since, rather than current market conditions.

Editor´s Message

The Solyndra collapse in the US has damaged investor sentiment throughout the solar industry. In an unrelated move, the UK Government has backtracked on its policy to provide feed-in-tariffs (FiTs) for the solar sector. The UK Government’s argument is that the prices of solar modules have fallen substantially since the policy was first put in place, and that the FiT subsidy now permits solar installers to make an unjustifiable return on their investments.
