Solar cells are an increasingly familiar sight, helping businesses and households cut their  CO2 emissions and reduce their energy bills, and powering a host of off-grid installations. But while the conventional photovoltaic (PV) cell technology is well established, it's still relatively inefficient, awkward and expensive to install, often unsightly, and demands a large amount of scarce crystalline silicon.
