2011: a giant step towards grid parity

2011 has been a tough year for many investors in renewable energy. A surge in capacity of low cost solar modules being produced by China, combined with the economic downturn in Western economies, has hit margins for manufacturers of solar equipment around the world – and has tipped the balance for high profile casualties such as Solyndra in the US. Wind turbine manufacturers have also been hit hard by the economic conditions – especially the slowdown in projects in the US. The established European and US manufacturers are facing emerging competition from Chinese exports in this industry too.

Dear Reader

At the Euromoney Renewable Energy Finance Forum in London (REFF London) in September, I chaired the Crystal Ball Panel. The panelists included Vivek Mittal of Millennium Resource Strategies, Jamie Fergusson of the International Finance Corporation, Eriks Atvars from Unicredit Bank AG and Peter Hobson from the EBRD. Not surprisingly, in the current climate, the key topic discussed was the future of financing renewable energy. The predictions and conclusions were varied, but there was a clear consensus that we need innovation in financing structures for renewables.

We are delighted to work with Revolve and the Bridgestone Eco-Rally team to produce this special issue of Cleantech magazine. This year the Eco-Rally starts in Oxford, close to the heart of the British motor industry. The Eco-Rally seeks to showcase the best in innovation in eco transport - and much of that innovation is taking place in and around Oxford and neighbouring counties.

In the aftermath of the Fukushima disaster in Japan, energy policy is high on the agenda for governments around the world. Germany has taken the decision to close down its nuclear energy industry entirely. As a manufacturing powerhouse – with a high energy requirement – this has broad economic repercussions.
