Bioplastics/Plastics Recycling:
Published in: 2011 - A Review of Cleantech Equity Deals, January 2012

The cleantech sector in 2011 had enough equity deals involving fundraising for companies with technology and businesses related to plastics to merit the inclusion of a dedicated section in our annual review for the first time. We include equity fundraising for both bioplastics, which might also come under the label of biochemicals, and for firms active in plastic recycling.

Companies with a biorefinery approach to next generation biofuels, which may also have activities in bioplastics, may also appear in the Renewable Fuels/Chemicals section.

Companies such as Coca-Cola Enterprises are investing in plastics recycling businesses like ECO Plastics, underpinning the future for recycling enterprises. However, Coca-Cola is also investing in research and development in bioplastics – which bodes well for prospects for bioplastics companies in the longer term.
