Andrew Woollett has had a tough few years. Not only did the ZincOx Resources Executive Chairman have to endure a number of disappointments as he tried to launch his first waste zinc recycling facility, he also had to fight off an attempt by rebel shareholders to remove him, and five of his colleagues, from the board earlier this year. The existing board won the vote easily at the general meeting, which was not even attended by the investors who had requisitioned the meeting.

After a number of false starts in the US and Turkey, it now appears that ZincOx will finally get its recycling operations up and running with the construction of its first recycling plant in South Korea. The basic technology being used by the company is proven. The operation takes waste from blast furnaces, processes it and produces zinc oxide. Iron can also be extracted at high temperatures.

Despite its involvement with gas-to-liquids projects for more than a decade, GTL Resources had made little progress until recent years. However, the company is about to reap the rewards of its investment in its Illinois ethanol plant.

GTL Resources started out as gold miner Bakyrchik Gold, a rare mining company flotation in the early nineties. However, the gold in the Kazakhstan mine was not as easy to extract as had been hoped, and the new technology used in the processing of the ore did not work properly.

Cleantech on AIM - 2009 in Review

First published on the Cleantech Investor website, January 2010

By Andrew Hore

Although the AIM Cleantech sector recovered well in 2009, it still failed to outshine AIM as a whole, which gained more than twice as much. While cleantech share prices rose, a number of companies left the market and there were few replacements during the year.

The Sigma Capital Cleantech index gained a creditable 21.7% in 2009, compared with a rise of 58.7% for the FTSE AIM 100 index. The FTSE AIM All Share index, which covers all the companies on AIM, did even better and was 65.9% higher.

Following an initial period of underperformance, the Sigma Capital Cleantech index was catching up to the AIM 100 during the summer. However, the gap between the two indices widened again during the fourth quarter.

AIM Investor: TEG Group

First published in Cleantech magazine, November/December 2009. Copyright Cleantech Investor 2009

By Andrew Hore

Lancashire-based TEG Group signed an important agreement in October. This will widen the scope of its activities to include anaerobic digestion, which will open up potential new markets for the company.

TEG’s in-vessel composting technology, which has been the company’s focus up until now, produces virtually no emissions and has low energy requirements because it is a single pass process that requires no turning or aeration of the waste. The addition of anaerobic digestion will enable the creation of energy from waste. The anaerobic digester will use food waste and certain crops, while in-vessel composting will handle the green waste unsuitable for the other process.
