Renewable Fuels/Chemicals
Published in: 2011 - A Review of Cleantech Equity Deals, January 2012
Many of the companies profiled in the Renewable Fuels/Chemicals section have adopted a ‘biorefinery’ approach, implying that they will produce a range of products including both fuels and chemicals. It is worth noting that a number of the companies covered elsewhere, notably some of the ethanol and bioplastics businesses, might also have been included here.

This sector was a rare IPO bright spot during 2011, with Gevo raising US$107.3 million and KiOR securing US$150 million on their NASDAQ IPOs. Also worthy of note was investment by oil and gas companies. Sundrop Fuels saw a subsidiary of natural gas producer Chesapeake Energy acquire a 50% stake, while oil company Valero Energy invested in Enerkem.
